Prepare your wood heater before winter arrives

As the cooler months approach, it's time to prepare your wood heater for the winter ahead. When your unit has been out of use for an extended period, it’s essential to give it the attention it needs to ensure it functions safely. Moisture buildup during long shutdowns can accumulate to cause damage, including cracking and rust.

Leave the door ajar for a while

If your wood heater has been shut and unused for several months, moisture may have built up inside the firebox. If you light a fire in the unit while there is high moisture, it can cause the glass to crack upon its first use for the season.

What can you do?

  • Ventilate the firebox: Leave vents/valves open for the whole off-season and leave the door slightly ajar for a couple of weeks or more before lighting your first fire for the cold season.

  • or, Use DampRid: Place a moisture absorber inside the firebox when the unit is not in use to help reduce excess moisture that may otherwise cause rust or cracks to develop over extended period of non-use.

Inspect and service the unit

Regular servicing can help catch issues early, extend the lifespan of your unit, and keep it running efficiently.

While the weather is warm, well in advance of when you want to start using it again, inspect it thoroughly to catch minor issues before they become expensive problems.
